Idea

Hi everyone,
I'm just wondering if everyone would rather come here. It's more central, I have three beds and David has 3 and I have several queen sized mattresses. We could see about Wonderland Ranch for Daytime activities. We could set up tents in the back yard for the kids and I'm thinking it would be lots cheaper. Lawsons did one here and had lots of fun activities. They even had a great race all over the Springs and even further that sounded fun.
We could even have a night fishing experience for those who would like that. Wonderland ranch has a fishing pond, amplitheater, petting zoo I think, and areas to cook and eat. It would be much easier for the ones in the east who don't have lots of money for gas and things. I think we could make it work.

Love Mom

(Please COMMENT and leave your opinion. And by opinion I mean just what you would rather do)

Holly's Favorite Subject and New Haircut

Here is a picture of my new haircut. I love it! I got highlights, too, but they are kind of hard to see in a picture.
As for my favorite class in school, I would also have to say choir and band for the same reasons that Heidi and Mindy gave. I also loved Biology (dissecting the live frog was the best!) and Anatomy and Physiology. My senior English class was really fun because Heidi was in that class, along with our best friend, David, and another friend from seminary. We had a lot of fun being the Mormon section of the class.

Problem

A problem has arisen in the all to easy (until now) reunion plans. We have discovered some problems with school for little kids. There are families that won't be out until the end of June. What Tere and I had been talking about was a four day three night kind of deal. Would there be kids that will be able to do a Thursday through Sunday type of deal in mid-June? What are some thoughts? We need ideas. We're kind of stuck and need some help since neither of the two planners have children in school...

New Tally for Lodging....

Just an update for those who haven't voted yet!

Bunkhouse-
Amy's Family
Heidi's Family
Jeny's Family
Holly's Family
Kristi's Family
That means the bunkhouse is full.

Tents-
Tere's Family
Nickell's Family
Matt's Family
David's Family(Either tent area or RV, they are going to rent a pop-up. At least that is what Dave said.)

This means I haven't heard from the following...
Lori
Mindy
April

Amy's Favorite Subject

Of course I liked choir better than anything! It was the only place where I was the best and who doesn't like to be the best? I was never really good at any other class except math. And I liked math a lot until my junior year when I got a really bad teacher. I always thought I was really good at math until that class and he made me feel like I didn't know a thing. Thank Goodness for choir!!!

Teresa's Favorite Subject

My favorite classes were by far my ROTC classes, especially when I was flight commander. I had such a blast with that class and we had to be rough on the underclassmen, it was part of the course :)
Then came choir. Music classes are always fun.
My favorite subject though was Chemistry. I absolutely loved chemistry class and wish I had taken more of them, but I wanted to try physics and earth sciences as well (which were either really hard or really lame). I had this varsity linemen as my lab partner who was really bad at chemistry, so I would teach him about chemistry and he would teach me about football, so that was kind of cool too.
In college I liked my writing class and my anatomy class, but I hated english classes all through high school (the curriculum- not the class. The class was a blast because my friend Eric an I were a bit rowdy)

Heidi's Favorite Subject

I loved anything music as well, but not for the same reasons as Mindy. I loved that we could get up and move around, chat with our friends, eat, whatever. The classes (and teachers) were SOOOOO laid back and I had so much fun. Perhaps it made for less of a learning environment, but I don't care. It was fun. The only academic class I think I ever liked was anatomy and physiology. We dissected some cool things in there, and even though it was an incredibly difficult class for me, I learned a lot. I still remember most of what I learned in there and helped Jason through his undergrad A&P class. Med school A&P was over my head.

Lodging for the Reunion.

I only have 5 votes for the lodging at the family reunion. This is what I have

Bunkhouse-
Amy's Family
Heidi's Family
Jeny's Family
Holly's Family
That equals 19? I believe 26 can stay in there, that means 7 more spots available....

Tents-
Tere's Family
Nickell's Family
Matt's Family

This means I haven't heard from the following...
Lori
Kristi
David (or Tricia because we know Dave doesn't look at this)
Mindy
April

It's also looking like it is going to be in mid-June 2010. That is the result of the poll. If you haven't taken it. Take it.

Nickell's Favorite Subject

Sorry Mindy but I hated math. I loved anything related to art, I loved English, psychology, and anatomy and physiology. I thought they were all so interesting.

Mindy's Favorite Subject

I loved anything music: band or choir. Probably choir more than band, because I felt special there, maybe a little better than the rest of the kids at that one thing. If we're talking academic subjects, then my answer would be math. Algebra in particular. It made sense to me, and it was fun to figure out the puzzles.

Question of the Week

What was your favorite subject in school?

Happy Anniversary Yesterday!!!

Happy 4 year anniversary to Holly and Matt! They celebrated their anniversary yesterday! Here is a little tid-bit of their day!

Yesterday was our anniversary, and it was a great day! I went to my sister-in-law's house to get a hair cut and color from her friend. They offered to keep the kids overnight, and I accepted. Then I came home and cleaned up the apartment really nice so that when Matt got home it was clean and quiet. He came home with a bouquet of flowers, a balloon, chocolates, and a crossword game for my Wii. We went to dinner (at Red Robin, of course), then I had to go to Mutual because all of the other leaders were at the high school registration with their kids. When I got home we spent a nice, quiet evening together. It was the best! I will post a picture of my new hair cut when I get a new camera.

Incentive.

Not because I think I'm great, just because people have mentioned they want this. A little incentive for getting your families to the reunion next summer. I will be doing family picture sittings for every family that is there. I know there will be at least 2 missing, (Spencer and Jordan) but everyone else will be able to get a family picture!

Jeny's Wisdom...

Ok, I really did laugh as I wrote that subject line. I know you're laughing, too. Stop it!

I don't have tons of wisdom, so mine will be short. Before Mark lost his job I would have to say one of my biggest fears was Mark losing his job. How would we ever survive? Since then I have learned a lot, and I think the best lesson there is not to fear. Aren't we commanded to not fear? Now that I have been forced to face that great fear I have learned that we can get through anything, and it's way easier to get through anything if we remember that Heavenly Father won't give us anything that will cause us to fail. A great family support system is a pretty good help, too!

Poll

Please take the poll. It's for the family reunion. You can select more than once answer if more than one month works for your family. You have a month to decide. Once we have figured out which month works best we will then decide what time of the month works best. And then we'll go from there.

We're really excited for this to happen!
Hello everyone. Tere and I have been talking about the reunion and planning is happening. We need a vote though. There are SO many options with the May Family Ranch. Now, I need everyone to comment and tell us what YOU and YOUR FAMILY would prefer as far as lodging. Then we will go from there. Also notice to the side, there is a poll. Let us know what time of year (during the summer) works best for you! Thanks!

Kristi's Advice

“let down your nets”

One of my favorite stories about faith is in the 5th chapter of Luke. It is told when Peter is standing by a lake with others washing and mending his nets after a long night of fishing. A group of people were gathering to hear the Savior teach and as he approached the fishermen he asked if he could take the boat out a little from the land.

We don’t have much of an indication about what was preached or for how long but it must have been significant because, you see, Jesus was a carpenter and Peter a fisherman. And at the conclusion Jesus asked Peter to take the boat out into deeper water and “let down your nets for a draught”.

And Peter did not hesitate. He simply answered “Master, we have toiled all the night, and have taken nothing: nevertheless at thy word I will let down the net”. Peter the fisherman at the word of the carpenter, acting in faith, let down his net. We all know what happened after that. (if you don’t know go read it J)

Peter received a witness there in his boat, and it was tested. He was told to act on it, in a seemingly illogical way. He was asked to do something that didn’t seem on its face to mean anything.

But it might have meant everything.

Like the tests we face. The things that don’t seem to mean anything, that seem to stretch our faith or push it across its limits.

The stranger told him to let down his net, and for no good reason – except faith– he did. At times the Lord will ask us to do things, for no good reason except faith.

Jesus didn’t ask Peter if he believed. He didn’t ask him what he thought of what he had just taught. He didn’t ask if he had felt anything unusual while he spoke. He gave him a mundane little instruction.

He asked Peter to go against his own judgment. He asked him to let down his net.

The subject was faith but the test was “show me,” not “tell me.” And certainly not “sit and wait for something to happen”.

And Peter passed. I hope you and I do as well. I hope we can see the subtlety of the trials of our faith, and have the strength and commitment to pass them.

So I guess the lesson I have learned that I want my children to learn is to let down your nets. When you think it doesn’t make sense, when there is no good reason to do it, when you think you have tried everything you can think of and exhausted every possibility…let down your nets…have faith in the Lord. Trust in his word and in his power to lead and guide. You must, you simply must believe there is someone that knows more about what you need than you do.

Teresa's Advice...

I don't know if I'm quite old enough to have pearls of wisdom to share with the world. There are 2 things that I try to do everyday though. One is Mindy's answer- think positive. Your attitude on life directly reflects how your life is going to be. The other is not to worry, not to be confused with not thinking or caring. I do what I can to make the right choice and not worry about things, especially when there is nothing I can do about what might happen. Keith always tells me- Dont worry, just do something (plan for the negative or change it for the positive)... and if you can't, stop thinking about it. I think its a good lesson because when I don't worry about stuff, I can work on thinking and being positive.

Heidi's Advice

Mindy did have the all important lesson, I think. I do have some other little ones. My family has a favorite saying that the kids learned in school: you get what you get and you don't throw a fit. We use that one a lot, especially when vegetables are served. There's also: use it up, wear it out--make due, or do without. I wish Jason and I used that one a little more. Too bad we just really like new things. That's probably our greatest weakness.
I just woke from a great 20 minute nap (Sara is still sleeping) and remember some great advice that always helps me. How many of you when facing a trial hear Dad's voice saying "This, too, shall pass"? I love it. Joseph Smith was in the depths of despair (to quote Anne Shirley) in Liberty jail and was crying out to God asking when all the suffering would end. He was given the answer in D&C 121:7-8, "My son, peace be unto thy soul; thine adversity and thine afflictions shall be but a small moment; And then, if thou endure it well, God shall exalt thee on high; thou shalt triumph over all thy foes.
This, too, shall pass.
Check out your brother.... You know the good looking one at the top...

Mindy's Lesson Learned

The most important thing I can think of right now is that the only thing you can control in life is your own attitude. I wish this was something that I could have learned by someone telling me instead of something I had to learn from experience. It's a hard thing to do, but even in the worst situations it is possible to keep a positive attitude and be uplifting to others. It's something I've seen others do and something I'm working on.

Question of the Week!

What is the most important lesson, message, or advice you've learned that you'd like to pass on for others to profit by?

A Night to Remember

So how's this for fun? Payne and I got to usher last night at the Louisville Palace for Air Supply! They started with 30 minutes of the symphony and then the strings stayed and played with Air Supply for their part of the concert. It was so much fun!! Admit it, you're all jealous (with the exception of Mom and Dad who probably have no idea what I'm talking about). Because of our current weather situation we have someone from our ward staying with us because she has no electricity, and she graciously agreed to help out with the kids so we could go. We even got to go out with my old bishop and his wife afterwards (his wife runs the Palace, it's great to know the right people). So we stayed out until 1:30 in the morning. I don't think we've ever done that, ever! And the concert was great! It's really nice to get paid to see a concert that others have paid over $100 to see. March is the Pointer Sisters. I'm not thrilled about that one but Payne wants to see them. I may let him go to that one alone.
